Ayurveda:

The Basics

Introduction to Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of life, views health as a dynamic balance between body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in natural principles, it teaches us to live in harmony with our environment and inner self..

The Panchmahabhootas – Five Great Elements

All matter in the universe, including the human body, is composed of five elements:

ElementSanskrit NameRole in Body
EtherAkashSpace within the body (mouth, abdomen, channels)
AirVayuMovement, respiration, muscular function
FireTejas / AgniMetabolism, digestion, intelligence
WaterJalaAll bodily fluids – blood, saliva, plasma
EarthPrithviSolid structures – bones, teeth, flesh

Each cell and organ system is an expression of these five interacting forces.

Mental Doshas – Trigunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas)

In Ayurveda, mental health is governed by three subtle energies:

Sattva

Purity, clarity, peace

Rajas

Activity, desire, restlessness

Tamas

Inertia, ignorance, darkness

When Sattva dominates, the mind is serene. Rajas and Tamas, when imbalanced, lead to emotional and psychological disturbances.

Tridoshas – Vata, Pitta & Kapha

These are the functional energies governing all physiological and psychological processes.

DoshaElementsGoverns
VataEther + AirMovement, respiration, circulation
PittaFire + WaterDigestion, metabolism, body temperature
KaphaWater + EarthGrowth, structure, lubrication, immunity

Health is a result of balanced doshas. Any imbalance leads to disease.

Daily & Seasonal Rhythms of Doshas

  • Vata: Active in old age, late night & post-digestion
  • Pitta: Active in middle age, mid-day & peak digestion
  • Kapha: Active in childhood, early morning & beginning of digestion

Understanding your dominant dosha and its rhythm can guide your lifestyle choices.
