Ayurvedic Eye Care: Simple Ways to Refresh Tired Eyes
By Dr. Vinod Kumar Founder & Chief Ayurvedic Physician, Ayuskama Institute of Yoga & Ayurveda, Rishikesh
We live in a world where our eyes rarely get a break. From the moment we wake up, we look at phones, computers, books, traffic and television. By evening, it is common to feel that familiar heaviness — tired eyes, a feeling of strain, or simply the desire to close our eyes for a few quiet minutes.
Ayurveda encourages us to look at wellness as a daily practice rather than waiting for discomfort to become a problem. Traditional Ayurvedic routines often emphasize cooling, relaxation and gentle care of the eyes and the area around them.
Rose Water: A Gentle Cooling Ritual
Rose water has traditionally been associated with cooling and soothing routines in Ayurveda and natural wellness.
For a simple home ritual, a clean cotton pad lightly moistened with suitable, cosmetic-grade rose water can be placed over closed eyelids for a few minutes. It can create a pleasant cooling sensation and become part of a relaxing evening routine.
However, rose water should not be casually poured or dropped directly into the eyes. Anything intended for use inside the eye must be sterile and specifically formulated for ophthalmic use.
Cucumber: Nature’s Cooling Touch
Cucumber slices are one of the most familiar home beauty rituals for tired-looking eyes. Their cool surface can provide a refreshing sensation when placed gently over closed eyelids.
Simply refrigerate clean cucumber slices for a short time and rest them over closed eyes for several minutes. This is best viewed as a comfort and relaxation practice, rather than a treatment for an eye disorder.
Potato Slices: A Traditional Home Practice
Another traditional home remedy is the use of cool potato slices over closed eyelids. The coolness can feel refreshing after a long day, particularly when the eyes and surrounding area feel tired.
As with cucumber, the important point is cleanliness. Use freshly washed produce, clean hands and clean slices, and keep the slices on the closed eyelids rather than inside or directly against the eye itself.
Don’t Forget the Most Important Ayurvedic Practice: Rest
Sometimes the simplest remedy is the most valuable one.
Give your eyes regular breaks from screens. Spend a few minutes looking into the distance. Reduce unnecessary screen exposure before bedtime and allow yourself adequate sleep.
These simple habits complement a broader wellness routine. Ayurveda can offer a holistic perspective, but these home practices should never be used to delay professional assessment of persistent eye symptoms. Evidence for complementary approaches in treating eye diseases is limited, and established eye care should not be replaced by unproven remedies.
A Final Thought
Healthy eyes are not only about what we put around them. They are also about how we live — how much we rest, how we use screens, how we nourish ourselves and how consciously we care for our body.
At Ayuskama, we believe Ayurveda is not simply about treating illness. It is about learning to listen to the body and developing mindful habits for everyday wellbeing.
