Description
Panchakarma, the crown jewel of Ayurveda, is a five-fold detoxification and rejuvenation therapy designed to cleanse the body at a cellular level and restore inner balance. At Ayuskama Ayurveda Rishikesh, our Panchakarma treatments are personalized and guided by qualified Ayurvedic doctors, ensuring safety, effectiveness, and long-lasting results.
What is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma literally means “five actions” (Pancha = five, Karma = actions) and refers to five therapeutic procedures used to cleanse the body of accumulated toxins (Ama) and balance the three Doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Unlike one-size-fits-all approaches, Panchakarma is highly individualized. Your treatment is designed based on:
- Your Ayurvedic constitution (Prakriti)
- Doshic imbalances
- Age and digestive strength
- Immune status
- Present health concernsPanchkarma
The Three Phases of Panchakarma
Purvakarma (Pre-Purification Phase)
This stage prepares the body to eliminate toxins through:
- Snehan (Oleation Therapy): Internal (medicated ghee) and external (oil massage) oleation to loosen deep-seated toxins.
- Swedan (Fomentation or Sweating): Herbal steam therapy that helps liquefy toxins for easier removal.
Pradhankarma (Main Detox Therapies)
The core of Panchakarma includes five primary procedures:
- Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis): Induces vomiting to remove excess Kapha, especially useful for asthma, congestion, and allergies.
- Virechana (Purgation Therapy): Herbal laxatives cleanse excess Pitta from the liver and small intestines, improving digestion and skin health.
- Basti (Medicated Enema): Herbal decoctions or oils are administered via the rectum to eliminate Vata-related toxins. Basti is effective for arthritis, constipation, and neurological issues.
- Nasya (Nasal Therapy): Medicated oils and powders are applied through the nostrils to clear the sinuses and balance Prana (vital energy).
- Raktamokshana (Bloodletting): Detoxifies the blood, often used in chronic skin disorders, hypertension, and inflammatory conditions.
Pashchatkarma (Post-Therapy Care)
After cleansing, we restore and strengthen the system through:
- Rejuvenating diets
- Herbal formulations
- Lifestyle recommendations
This ensures long-term results and prevents recurrence.

Consultation is Key
Each Panchakarma treatment begins with a detailed Ayurvedic consultation to assess:
- Constitution (Prakriti) and imbalances (Vikriti)
- Health history and current symptoms
- Appropriate intensity and duration of therapy
We strictly avoid standardized Panchakarma packages, as healing must be personalized. While some individuals may benefit from a 7-day protocol, others may require 3–6 weeks of customized care.
Medical Supervision is Essential
Panchakarma must be carefully administered, especially in cases like:
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- Autoimmune conditions
- Asthma
- Arthritis
- Recovery from addiction or eating disorders
Our team at Ayuskama is well-equipped to safely guide patients through these delicate processes.
